Electric pressure cookers have become more common in recent years. For a lot of households they have become vital tools when cooking meals. They preserve nutrients and flavors while also cooking meals in a short period of time. They have changed home cooking for the better. Choosing the right one can be a difficult task because there are so many different options available.

When buying an electric pressure cooker, it is important that you choose the correct sized one. You want to ensure that it meets your cooking desires and installs easily into your kitchen space. I wrote the following post which will guide you through the method of choosing the right sized electric pressure cooker for your needs.

You should think about factors such as family size, cooking habits, and what space you have available on your kitchen counter. Considering these things can help you make the right buying decision. Let’s look at the key considerations and how to find the perfect size of electric pressure cooker for you.

Understanding Electric Pressure Cookers

Modern kitchens often have electric pressure cookers due to their convenience, efficiency, and versatility. Here’s a quick guide to how they work and why they are often preferred over traditional cooking appliances:

Functionality: They cook food quickly and evenly by using sealed chambers and high-pressure steam. The boiling point of water is raised thus allowing food to cook faster than other methods.

Advantages Over Traditional Methods:

  • Time-saving: Cooking times are significantly reduced which makes them perfect for busy individuals and families.
  • Energy-efficient: They cook food faster and consume less energy compared to traditional stovetop cooking methods.
  • Retains nutrients: Pressure cookers have a sealed environment that typically retains more nutrients in the food when compared to other methods such as boiling or steaming.
  • One-pot meals: You will save some time if you prepare your entire meal in a pressure cooker because you only have one pot to clean.

Common Features:

  • Multiple Cooking Functions: A lot of pressure cookers allow you to cook in different ways. For instance, you can slow cook, sauté, steam and much more.
  • Programmable Settings: They often have default programs that allow you to start cooking with just one touch of a button.
  • Safety Mechanisms: Safety features are a part of all modern electric pressure cookers. These include locking lids, pressure sensors and other features.

Electric pressure cookers are very versatile and efficient due to their many features. I would say that they are indispensable in the average kitchen.

I like the fact that pressure cookers retain more nutrients when compared to other cooking methods. I often cook frozen meat so it saves me from having to defrost it separately. However, I wouldn’t be cooking large chunks of frozen meat in my pressure cooker as this is not recommended.

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Size

Have a think about the following items before deciding on what size you will need:

Family Size and Portion Requirements:

  • How many people do you normally cook for and what portion sizes do they have?
  • If you are only cooking for yourself or a small family then a small electric pressure cooker (typically 3-6 quarts) will be enough. However, if you cook for a large family then one that’s 6-10+ quarts will be needed.

Available Kitchen Space:

  • Measure the available counter space to see how much room you have for a pressure cooker.
  • Check the dimensions against some of the different models that you see on Amazon’s site or another vendor’s site.

Types of Meals You Frequently Cook:

  • Think of the size of meals that you regularly cook as some may require a bigger product.
  • For instance, if you cook a whole chicken then a small pressure cooker won’t suffice. The same applies if you like to batch cook meals.

Cooking for Special Occasions or Gatherings:

  • Do you have large numbers of people over for special occasions? Such as birthdays and family gatherings.
  • Having a large electric pressure cooker could be very handy for these times.

Determining the Right Size for Your Needs

After reading through all of the above, you should be ready to decide on the size that will suit you best. Below, I have categorized the products into small, medium and large:

Small Electric Pressure Cookers (3-6 quarts):

  • These are suitable for individuals, couples, or small families (1-3 members).
  • Ideal for cooking side dishes, soups, grains, and small portions of main courses.
  • If you don’t have much spare counter space.

Medium Electric Pressure Cookers (6-8 quarts):

  • Suitable for small to medium-sized families (3-5 members).
  • Cooks a good-sized main meal for several people or even a main meal and some sides.
  • The most common size for people to purchase as it’s suitable for a typical family.

Large Electric Pressure Cookers (8-10+ quarts):

  • Ideal for large families or people that like to entertain.
  • Cooks large quantities of food and big chunks of meat.
  • Batch cooking fanatics will love it.

So make sure to double check the size of the pressure cooker before purchasing as otherwise you could be disappointed if it doesn’t fit on your counter or if you can’t cook for your whole family at the same time. You can shorten the time it takes to prepare you meals if you make use of this versatile product.

Personally, I find the small size suits me perfectly. I tend not to cook my whole meal in the pressure cooker. For example, if I am making a chicken curry then I would cook the rice separately. There are just two of us in my household so a larger size would be too much for us. Also, we don’t have a lot of spare counter space.

My sister has a medium size pressure cooker but then she has three people in her family and she often has people over for dinner so she needs a bigger size than myself.

Other Considerations

After settling on the best size for your needs you should think about some other features that you want to have in your electric pressure cooker. These can make a big difference to your cooking experience:

Additional Features Beyond Size:

  • Look out for items such as smart programs, keep warm option and safety features.
  • Decide on the features that are most important to you with regard to your cooking style.

Brand Reputation and Warranty:

  • Do some research on the popular brands and see which ones are reliable and durable.
  • All electric pressure cookers come with a warranty. Check the scope of the warranty – how long and what cover does it provide?

Budget Considerations:

  • Decide how much you are prepared to spend and then look at the separate brands and models available within your budget.
  • However, you may have to pay a bit more than you planned to spend to get all the features that you want.

Allowing for these additional considerations and for the size of the pressure cooker, will help you make a knowledgeable decision as to which one suits you needs best. Always do your research as this will pay off for you in the long run.

In conclusion, when choosing the appropriate size of electric pressure cooker for your needs you should consider various factors. These factors include how much space you have, the size of your family and the types of food that you cook.

The above guide goes through these factors to help you come to a decision about whether you need a small, medium or large pressure cooker. Hopefully you are much more knowledgeable now as to which size suits you best.

Near the end of the post, we examined factors other than size which you need to take into account when making a decision on the best electric pressure cooker for you.
